A) The vampires
1. Officially a vampire is a being from folklore that subsists by feeding on the vital force (generally in the form of blood) of the living. In European folklore, vampires were undead beings that often visited loved ones and caused mischief or deaths in the neighborhoods they inhabited while they were alive. [1]
2. The meaning of a vampire or dracula however can be based not on fiction but on reality. For example some aspects of Bram Stoker’s 1897 gothic horror novel Dracula are believed to have been inspired by the 15th-century Wallachian Prince Vlad the Impaler, who was also known as Dracula. [2]
3. There are also examples of creatures in nature which are fed on their victim’s blood. Vampire bats are bats whose food source is blood, a dietary trait called hematophagy. Three extant bat species feed solely on blood: the common vampire bat (Desmodus rotundus), the hairy-legged vampire bat (Diphylla ecaudata), and the white-winged vampire bat (Diaemus youngi). All three species are native to the Americas, ranging from Mexico to Brazil, Chile, Uruguay and Argentina. [3]
B) Their followers
4. Human society is not much different from a forest or a jungle. No matter what the political system might be, in the end we all obey the same simple rule- you either accept the system and benefit from it, or you reject it and live at its margins.
5. Should we kill all bats in the jungle, or should we let them keep on drinking our blood? Would a world without sheep be better, or would this just drive the wolves to extinction? Could nature exist without grazing animals and predators?
6. Remember when you were young? You shone like the sun… Shine on, you crazy diamond! [4]
7. How would you like to live on a desert island- forever free? Finally all of us will drink the blood of others someday…
C) The castaways
8. A castaway is defined as a person who is cast adrift or ashore. While the situation usually happens after a shipwreck, some people voluntarily stay behind on a deserted island, either to evade captors or the world in general. [5]
9. When you cannot avoid something, you can still refuse it. A bird in a cage can still sing. This is the encouraging thought: If in nature there will always be pray and predators, there will also be a third category- free birds which will fly away and keep on singing.
10. How long can you last in your summer holidays? How much less luxury can you afford? How great is the unforgiving sea!
11. There’s always a stupid person digging on the Treasure Island. How unwise it was of us to utter the name of eternity so naively and full of greed!
D) A matter of principle
12. But wait a minute. Which is that strange ship approaching from the horizon? Where will it be headed afterwards? How many ‘desert’ islands lie there in this familiar sea? How many little treasures do these islands hide- for those who have the trained eyes to see!
13. Should we finally go back to a relentless modern jungle? There where everybody’s running for no reason? Where nobody can either breathe or hide?
14. Or should we stay here forever? Here where neither bosses nor slaves can thrive?
15. No one but a flock of seagulls in the sky…
